Your result says which variation won. It does not say why. Connect Microsoft Clarity and you can watch the people who saw one variation, and read a heatmap of just their clicks.
Clarity is free and has no traffic limit.
What this does
Every visitor who enters a test gets tagged with which test and which variation they are in. Clarity records the session as it always would, and the tag rides along with it.
So in Clarity you can say "show me only the people who saw Itemised" and get their recordings, their heatmap and their numbers.
Before you start
Clarity has to be on your site already. We do not install it for you.
Get it from clarity.microsoft.com, then paste their tag into your site the same way you pasted ours.
Put Clarity's tag above ours in the head. If it loads after ours, some visitors are tagged and some are not, and you will not be able to tell which.
Connect it
- In Clarity, open Settings, then Overview. Copy the project ID. It is
a short string of letters and numbers, like
abcd1234ef. - Here, open Project settings, then the Integrations tab.
- Next to Microsoft Clarity, press Connect.
- Paste the ID and press Connect.
That is the whole setup. Nothing needs to change on your site.
Find the recordings
- Open Clarity and go to Recordings or Heatmaps.
- Open Filters, then Custom tags.
- Pick the tag named after this tool.
- Choose the test and variation you want, for example
Checkout: itemised vs plain - Itemised. - Press Apply.
Everything you are looking at is now only the people who saw that variation.
There is a shortcut on every results page. Under the table there is a line telling you which tag to pick and what to look for, with a copy button.
Save the filter as a segment in Clarity. Then you can come back to one variation's recordings in one click for as long as the test runs.
It takes a while to show up
A test that has just started will not be in Clarity's filter list yet. Clarity says a new tag appears 30 minutes to 2 hours after it first sees it.
That wait is Clarity's, not ours. The tag is being sent from the first visitor.
What we do not do
| Install Clarity for you | No. Their tag is yours to add |
| Check that Clarity is really there | No. We take your word for it |
| Bring Clarity's numbers back into this tool | No. Their export cannot break data down by our tag |
| Send anything about who a visitor is | No. Only which test and which variation |
If you connect Clarity and never install their tag, nothing breaks and nothing happens. Your tests run exactly as before and no recordings get tagged.
Turn it off
Project settings, Integrations, the three dots next to Microsoft Clarity, then Disconnect.
New sessions stop being tagged straight away. Recordings already in Clarity keep the tags they were made with, because they are a record of what happened.
