Getting started

Add your domain

Tell us which web addresses your site uses, so the visits your tag records are counted.

On this page 7

Your tag is on the page. The last step is to tell us where your site lives, by listing the web addresses it answers on, such as www.example.com.

We only count visits that come from an address on your list. That is what stops somebody copying your tag onto their own site and filling your reports with their visitors.

Warning

A visit from an address you have not listed is dropped. Nothing tells you, and your reports stay empty. If the tag is on the page but no data arrives, look here first.

Add an address

  1. Open Project settings, then the Domains tab.
  2. Below the list of domains, type the address, such as www.example.com.
  3. Add a label if it helps you tell them apart. Only you see it.
  4. Press Add domain.

Type the address on its own. We tidy up the rest, so https://www.example.com/pricing is saved as www.example.com.

Add every address your visitors see

Two addresses that look alike are still two addresses.

  • If both example.com and www.example.com open your site, add both.
  • Subdomains are separate. shop.example.com is not covered by example.com.

Miss one, and every visitor who arrives there is a visitor you never hear about.

The primary address

The first one you add is marked Primary. It answers the question "where does this project mostly live". We name it first in checks, and offer it first when you build a test and have to choose a page.

It does not decide whose data we keep. Every address on the list is counted, primary or not.

To move the mark to another address, press Make primary on its row.

How many you can add

Your plan decides how many. The line under Add domain shows how many you have used.

If you are out of room, remove one you no longer test on. Removing an address stops new data from it. The results you have already collected stay where they are.

Visitors who move between your addresses

Add a second address and one switch appears: Follow visitors between these hosts.

Some people start on one of your sites and finish on another. They read about a product on example.com and buy it on shop.example.com. Turn this on and we count that as one person doing one thing. Leave it off and each address counts them as a separate visitor.

Turn it on when a visitor has to cross from one of your addresses to another to buy, book or sign up.

Note

This works by adding a small piece to the links that point at your other addresses, so it only follows somebody who clicks through. Anybody who types the second address, or arrives there straight from an email, starts again as a new person.

Check it worked

On the Domains tab, press Verify on the address's row. When the script is in place, the row says Verified.

If you were seeing nothing arrive, wait a few minutes, then open your project's live events and watch what comes in while you click around your own site.

What happens next

Your tag is on the page and your addresses are listed, so everything your visitors do is now being recorded. Next comes deciding what counts as success.
